October 9th is nationally recognized as Leif Erikson Day!  In honor of Leif Erikson, the Viking who settled North America almost 500 years before Christopher Columbus set sail.  Leif was first recognized as the first European to discover North America by President Coolidge in 1925, and President Lyndon Johnson made October 9th National Leif Erikson day in 1964.  That the Vikings were in America a full half millennia before the rest of Europe was one of my favorite little tidbits I learned in school.
