In her blog post earlier today Kelley Peterson called me out on a lifetime secret: I've never had an orange.
Let me repeat that. I've never had an orange.
There's no real reason for this. I'm not allergic. If I remember correctly they were always around when I was a kid. I just didn't get it. Why do I have to peel it? How do I peel it? Do I need a knife? If I'm going to eat fruit don't make me require utensils. Once it is peeled why is there all that white stuff still on it? I hated pulp in orange juice... wouldn't eating an orange just be like one big pulp ball?
So I just never tried it. I assumed I would like the taste just fine it was just all the other extra work involved that made me decide Apples were more my style.... Until today.
Once I told Kelley my citrusy secret she immediately hatched scheme to get me to finally eat an orange. Better still.. she filmed it. So for your viewing pleasure here it is... Derrick Russell's first orange.
While it wasn't as bad as I thought (although seriously... is Vitamin C worth that much chewing?) And I don't think my fingers will ever stop smelling like citrus... I'm going to stick with my apples and other more easily accessible fruit.
