Kelley Peterson

This first holiday season without my Dad is certain to be very tough.
There are things that have happened every year for as long as I can remember... but this year they will be different.

My Dad has always played an integral role in the preparation of the Thanksgiving & Christmas meal.  He is the "taster". The dressing could not be baked until he had tasted it and given direction as to what spices needed to be added.  Mom would mix all of the ingredients in a large bowl, and when she thought she had it close, she would microwave a couple of tablespoons worth for Dad.  "More sage" or "too much sage" were common comments.  We learned that if he needed multiple "tastes" without adjustments that Mom had the balance just right.
This same tasting technique was in place for the deviled eggs as well.  Over the years, the deviled egg prep has become my responsibility.  Dad was none too pleased that his role as deviled egg "taster" shifted to Mr. Peterson & my man-cub.

I've heard that the grief becomes more managable with time, but for me this first holiday season without the "taster" will be hard.
