The first concert of the last George Strait live tour was absolutely wonderful! Martina McBride was his opening act and she was magnificent. She got several standing ovations and was visibly surprised and touched by the ovation following "Broken Wings".
Then there was a great video that followed George Strait's career from it's beginning in 1981 to the present. And as I sat there and watched the video, I realized that his career and mine started at the same time! One of the first songs I ever played on country radio was George Strait's "Unwound". So when George started playing some of those early songs that about half the audience at the concert didn't recognize, I did.
I was fortunate enough early in my career (and his) to meet George Strait on his bus. He was absolutely charming. In fact, I wasn't a real big fan until I met him that night! And I know exactly where I was (at a wedding in Houston) when I heard about the death of his daughter and ached for him and Norma.
Then one of the real highlights of my career was when Mike and I won the CMA "Broadcast Personality of the Year" in 1996. K.T. Oslin thought it would be fun to bring all of us awkward radio people up on stage with her. It was the LAST time the CMA's announced the Broadcast awards live, by the way! But there I was, standing on that stage, and looking down at the front row where George Strait was sitting. I smiled down at him...and he smile back up at me! A moment I will never forget.
So, as George said goodbye in Lubbock, I wonded if it is time for me to say goodbye as well? Then I remembered...George is rich and CAN retire! I gotta keep working. And the good news? George is going to keep singing! So you will continue to hear Mike and I (and George Strait!) on Kicks 99!
