OUTDOOR
Now is the time to install a rain and freeze sensor to your sprinkler system.  You'll save money by eliminating unnecessary water use, and avoid the repairs that may be needed if your system freezes.

OUTDOOR
Water deeply but infrequently to develop deep root structure.  Water restrictions allow watering  your yard between 6 p.m. and Midnight to avoid evaporation.

OUTDOOR
Landscape with trees and plants that require less water.

OUTDOOR
Mulch beds and trees with organic or inorganic materials to reduce moisture evaporation from soil by up to 50%.  Don't fertilize.  It creates excessive growth and water needs.

OUTDOOR
Use DRIP IRRIGATION to water tree, shrubs and landscape beds.  Use drought tolerant or native plants that need less water.

OUTDOOR
Check for misaligned sprinkler heads after mowing so you are not watering the building, driveway, sidewalk or streets.  Repair or replace any damaged sprinkler heads.

INDOOR
Check all faucets, pipes, and toilets for leaks.  A faucet drip or invisible leak in the toilet will add up to 15 gallons of water a day, or 105 gallons a week or 5,475 gallons wasted water a year.

INDOOR
Don't let the water run when you brush your teeth, wash your face or hands, or shave.  This can save 3 to 7 gallons per minute.

INDOOR
Check your commode for leaks by putting a small amount of food coloring in to the tank.  Wait 10 minutes and check the bowl for the presence of colored water.  If the water is colored, a leak is present that needs to be repaired.  Don't use your toilet as a "flushable wastebasket".

INDOOR
In the kitchen, choose a water saving dishwasher, which can reduce water use by 30%.  And, always wash full loads of dishes.  If you hand wash dishes, turn off the water when your aren't rinsing or run a sink of water to rinse.

INDOOR
Low-flow or air assisted commodes can save up to 70% of toilet water use.  Cut water use by 20% in existing commodes by placing a 1/2 gallon plastic jug of water or a toilet dam in your tank.  Do not use bricks, they can fall apart and can plug your system.

INDOOR
Operate your washing machine with full loads only.  Wash with cold water when practical.

INDOOR
Check for faucets and showerheads.

The average American household uses 350 gallons of water each day.  We need to conserve more water!  For more good water conservation habits visit our website at keepmidlandbeautiful.org.
