Country Music is mostly a drama free genre. Most Country artists are straightforward and honest. But every once and a while a group comes along that is all drama and intrigue. That group these days is The Civil Wars, and they might be the biggest mystery in Country Music right now. The duo released their first full album, Barton Hollow, in 2011. In 2012 they won Grammy's for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and for Best Folk Album. They won another Grammy for the Song they did with Taylor Swift and T-Bone Burnett for The Hunger Games Soundtrack. The chemistry the two have seems to stem from decades together living through every possible situation life could throw at them, but in reality they met randomly during a songwriting session in 2008. Many of their fans, including myself, thought they had to be a couple but they are actually both Married separately and both have kids. At the end of 2012 they were set to headline a big European tour... but just as it was starting the group went on Hiatus saying they had "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition." And they haven't been in public together since. None of that is the mystery, the mystery is what has happened since. Both have said they haven't talked to the other, they are still on official hiatus with no plans at all for another tour.... But they have a new album that is being released August 6th, and they just released their first single from it "The One That Got Away" here it is below:
The new album is self titled The Civil Wars and they really live up to their name. All they have said about it is that it tells the story of the band, including why they are on "hiatus." Anytime a band decides to work out their issues in their music and not in the headlines, I will always be down to listen.
