My niece, Megan, has a service animal. Well, a service lizard, really. Chief is a Bearded Dragon. Chief is Megan’s constant companion. She is a registered service animal because she helps Megan with her social anxiety in public places. I have been watching this amazing creature draw so much attention everywhere Megan goes. And she has done so much research on “beardies” that she can give quite a talk about her friend.
Now, you may think that this attention would be difficult for someone with social anxiety. Megan says she is comfortable with the attention Chief gets because the attention is not about HER it is about her lizard! She even keeps Chief in a harness when she is out in public with her. And she always wears the badge that designates Chief as a “service animal”. Very few places ever have a problem with her.
What I have noticed about this amazing creature is that she has a real personality! She loves to ride on Megan’s shoulder, or inside her shirt. She turns her head to listen to everyone talk. She smiles. She has a tank that she sleeps in, but she will bang her head against it until Megan takes her out. Then she sleeps on the pillow next to Megan’s head.
Megan is visiting Midland for awhile so if you see her and Chief, make sure you say Hi!
